Catch up : Concord Staff |
Simon started off in Concord’s IT team and enjoyed using photography equipment in his spare time. This interest in cameras and tech soon became his main job at Concord job too. He now makes sure the lighting and microphones, and all the sound on Concord’s stage and recording studios is perfect. But there’s more…he also takes and edits College photographs and videos, organises YouTube streaming at shows and ceremonies for parents and takes drone footage at events too. Note from editor: He was a big help when I created the alumni video we show at assemblies too!
Simon’s office sits right at the top of the theatre, which was built in 2000. Over the last 24 years the original equipment and flooring has now been replaced with more modern tech. We popped up there last week to say goodbye and ask a few ‘quick fire’ questions about his Concord memories.
Q) Please give us a top tip about how to take great photos like the ones you did of Beauty and the Beast earlier this term.
Good lighting is very important and it’s helpful to have a good telephoto lens which makes images pop and helps push the background out of focus.
Q) Have you ever performed on stage yourself?
Barry Brown, Head of Science, was doing a talk about the importance of sleep and I had to lie on stage and pretend to be asleep.
Q) What’s your favourite part of doing a show?
Simon Bannister does the sound when I do the lighting and we have a tradition of kicking off our shoes when it all gets going.
Q) Which of your jobs is your favourite?
I really enjoy videography. It is very satisfying when it comes out right.
Q) What makes you happy at work?
Lots of things! –The variety of work, every day being different, never knowing what new challenge may come my way, and working alongside such a great bunch of people!
A note from James Sumnall, one of Simon's colleagues in the ICT team...
"Reflecting on Simon's time here, it's impossible to overlook the immense contributions he's made to our ICT team and the entire college body. Simon's dedication, expertise, and unwavering commitment to excellence in his video production and technical theatre wizardry have been truly inspiring. He's been more than just a colleague; he has been a mentor, a confidant, and a friend to many of us.
As Simon moves onward, let us take a moment to recognize his legacy and the indelible mark he has left on us. His professionalism, integrity, and positive attitude have set a high standard for us all, and we will strive to uphold it in his absence.
While I will miss Simon's presence dearly, there are exciting opportunities lying ahead for him. Please join me in wishing him all the success and happiness in the world as he embarks on this new adventure. May his future be bright, and his journey filled with joy and fulfilment.
Thank you for everything, Simon. You will be deeply missed."
